The Act of Drinking Pea Soup with Friends is the Highest Form of Art, 2024–5
162 bottles, wine poem, invisible ink, shelf, UV lights

This installation remixes elements of Tom Marioni’s artwork The Act of Drinking Beer With Friends is the Highest Form of Art (1970–ongoing). This free weekly beer salon and jazz listening series has operated from the artist’s studio in San Francisco for the past 55 years.

Since December, pea, carrot, and marjoram wines had been fermenting in Sinne. They were distributed amongst bottles that each bear a fragment from Bebetton’s trilingual wine poem. Visitors to the exhibition could hear the poem amplified in the space as part of a 4 channel sound piece.

With the help of a UV light, you could find an invisible ink surprise (from the curators) on each label—snippets from some of the collective dreams that had arisen during the conversational soup lunches of the past 6 weeks.

Bebetton's wine poems that were originally compiled for the remix of 'The Act of Drinking…' are echoed in site specific stanzas sung by Samuel Meri. This alternates with a set of algorhythmic canteen music which invokes the space’s history as an Elanto canteen in the 1930s–50s.
